(part-time) Grants Specialist

Esq. Apprentice is building a world where the law works for -- and not against -- people of color. We know that when we increase debt-free access to legal careers for low-income women of color, we can best heal the harms of our broken (in)justice system. Our current legal educational pipeline is too expensive and exclusive to be accessible -- so we’re changing the game entirely.

To support our ambitious mission, Esq. Apprentice is seeking a highly detailed part-time Grants Specialist to join our team! This is a unique opportunity to join a high-growth team. Reporting to our Executive Director Rachel Johnson-Farias, the Grants Management Specialist will play an important role as a high-level contributor to the development of our rapidly growing organization.

  • An experienced grants manager - You are familiar with public and private fundraising opportunities in areas of workforce development, women’s empowerment, and racial /economic equity, and have secured over a million dollars in a fiscal year. From end to end, you take joy in finding new funding opportunities, coordinating grant activities, communicating with stakeholders and reporting and evaluation to ensure that grant objectives are met and outcomes are properly documented.

  • A highly organized, meticulous storyteller --- you are energized by using numbers and data to tell mission-driven stories. You are a highly effective and persuasive writer and strong communicator. You believe in tracking dates and deadlines, and submitting reports, invoices, and funder requested information in a timely manner.

  • An independent and self motivated problem-solver -- you do extremely well working on your own and internalizing guidance. You are comfortable working in remote settings and adept at keeping a home office. You apply an intersectional and holistic approach to problem-solving.

What you’ll do:

  • Grant Research & Development (45%)
    • Prospect new grant opportunities relevant to Esq. Apprentice’s mission sound judgment

    • Develop a mission-aligned rubric in applying for funding opportunities

    • Writing and developing grant proposals

    • Crafting compelling narratives

    • Detailing project plans

    • Ensuring alignment with grantor priorities

  • Grants Management (45%)
    • Maintaining organized records of grant applications, correspondence, reports, and financial records

    • Creating and managing grant budgets, including timely submission of invoices and reports

    • Communicating with team members, stakeholders and grantors. This includes responding to inquiries, attending meetings and sharing project updates regularly

    • Monitoring and ensuring compliance to grant terms and regulations

    • Analyze project data and key performance indicators to measure progress and impact.

    • Prepare and submit regular progress reports to grantors, detailing achievements, challenges and financial expenditures (Reporting)

    • Evaluate and assess impact of grant-funded projects

  • Stakeholder Engagement (10%)
    • Reporting relevant apprentice data to grants, marketing and executive teams

    • Building and maintaining relationships with grantors and partners; including negotiating terms, resolving issues or seeking additional support.

    • Staying current with grant management best practices, regulations and technology

    • Building connections within the grant community, attending peer conferences and participating in peer networks.

Experiences that may lead to success in the role:

  • An ability to learn new systems and processes quickly; especially legal reading and writing.

  • A demonstrated experience successfully managing grants

  • Warm relationships with funding program officers and strong funder networks

Working at Esq. Apprentice

  • Location: Remote

  • Start date: September 2024

  • Type: Part-Time (16 hours per week)

  • Benefits: competitive medical/vision/dental package, generous paid time off, annual office closure for deep rest, and bonus potential post-annual review. As a part-time position, the specialist will have a 2-day work week.

  • Annual Salary: $62,000-75,000 (Prorated to reflect .5 FTE/16 hours per week).
