Program Manager

Esq. Apprentice is building a world where the law works for -- and not against -- people of color. We know that when we increase debt-free access to legal careers for low-income women of color, we can best heal the harms of our broken (in)justice system. Our current legal educational pipeline is too expensive and exclusive to be accessible -- so we’re changing the game entirely.

To support our ambitious mission, Esq. Apprentice is seeking a dynamic Program Manager to join our team and launch our inaugural Excelerator program! The Excelerator will be the nation’s first legal pre-apprenticeship program helping low-income women of color attain entry level law jobs and convert those jobs to sustainable legal careers.

This is a unique opportunity to join a high-growth team at an exciting moment as we launch our latest programmatic offerings with an enormous opportunity to grow into a Director level within the first year. Reporting to our Executive Director Rachel Johnson-Farias, the Program Manager will play an important role as a high-level contributor to our rapidly scaling organization.

Who will love this job:

  • A highly organized “do-er”– you’re an experienced program and project manager who has directly managed people and processes from start to finish in a hybrid workplace. You know when to solve or elevate issues to your manager, and you find meaning in making ambiguous or gray things very concrete, and thus, you love getting things done.

  • A primary point person – you gain energy from solving problems for and with communities of color in a trauma-informed way. You have the ability to translate complex processes (like legal apprenticeship) clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, communicate openly and collaboratively, and maintain confidentiality.

  • A systems-level critical thinker --- you are energized by creating new intersectional systems and improving old systems while helping people reach their broadest potential. You know that holding your team accountable is one of the most important parts of driving a successful outcome for the team.

  • A champion of equity – you know that providing women-focused economic development is crucial to establishing a more just legal educational pipeline and system.

  • An experienced data-driven decision maker – your experience and expertise leads to iterative, data-based learning that you take joy in implementing critically, carefully and with sound judgment.

What you’ll do:

  • Excelerator Program Management (75%)
    • Manage all parts of Esq’s inaugural Excelerator Fellowship, including  meeting day-to-day needs, creating systems, updating and integrating new processes, and communicating regularly with Fellows

    • Facilitate and design remote Excelerator classes (may include evening and weekend hours)

    • Develop new program initiatives and deliverables

    • Communicate regularly with law firms, and other Excelerator stakeholders

  • Fellowship Recruitment and Partnership Management (15%)
    • Manage full process to identify new cohorts, including the marketing, recruiting, and interviewing of candidates

    • Develop Point of View on the necessary qualities required to be a successful Excelertor Fellow and recruit specifically for said profile

    • Develop and maintain new partnerships to build pipelines of current and future Excelerator candidates

    • Represent Esq. professionally with community partners to engender meaningful partnership and positive impact

  • Compliance and Reporting (10%)
    • Identify key data metrics to track year-over-year to determine Excelerator success

    • Report relevant apprentice data to grants, marketing and executive teams

    • Join ED for convos with external stakeholders as needed

Experiences that may lead to success in the role

  • Program Management experience, specifically supporting adult learners

  • Experience and passion for working with women of color and low-income communities
